Ken Evans obtained a PhD in chemistry in 1971 from the University of Manchester and immediately started working on research in bauxite, alumina and red mud for the Rio Tinto/Alcan/British Aluminium group of companies with whom he remained until the end of 2012. During that period he was involved in all aspects of the alumina business including: bauxite extraction; the production and uses of aluminium hydroxide and aluminium oxide; remediation of contaminated alumina plants; uses of red mud; and remediation of former red mud sites. He has variously been Research Director, Technical Director, Technology Director and Development Director of various parts of the Rio Tinto/Alcan group.
He remains actively involved in remediating former red mud sites and working as a consultant in alumina, bauxite and red mud matters.
